This is a pioneering process in the field of astrophysics research, as LCA are sparse. The result of this long-term work is a scientific publication reporting the results of the LCA. This publication, entitled\u00a0<em>\u201cLife Cycle Assessment of the Athena X-ray Integral Field Unit<\/em>\u201c, was published in Experimental Astronomy in April 2024. It is freely available on <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2404.15122\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ArXiv<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Integrating environmental constraints into astrophysics research<\/h3>\n<p>The climate crisis demands urgent action from all parts of society, including the scientific community. This is why environmental considerations need to be integrated into astrophysics research, with life cycle assessment as the first step. LCA is an eco-design approach that assesses the environmental impact of a product or service from conception to end-of-life, by quantifying the flows of energy and materials used. This approach, detailed in the scientific publication, and the results obtained, aim to highlight the most significant environmental impacts associated with the building of X-IFU, and to make recommendations for reducing them. As the X-IFU design evolved along the reformulation of the Athena mission, a second life cycle assessment is being performed to extend these initial results.<\/p>\n<h3>Life cycle assessment: which method?<\/h3>\n<p>The X-IFU LCA was carried out under a contract with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scalian.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SCALIAN<\/a>, a company able to assess the environmental impact of space projects. At the time this LCA was carried out, very few scientific projects had been the subject of such a study, which confronted the teams with the lack of pre-existing data. From a methodological point of view, an LCA takes place in three phases:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>definition of its goal and scope ;<\/li>\n<li>the life cycle inventory analysis phase;<\/li>\n<li>the life cycle impact assessment phase.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The objective definition phase identifies the goal of the assessment, its scope, applications, target audience and stakeholders. The life-cycle inventory analysis phase inventories, collects and organizes the necessary data. At this stage, the issue of the heterogeneity of the data collected represents a major challenge in the conduct of the study. The life-cycle impact assessment phase quantifies environmental impacts according to the various indicators used in the study, and identifies the points of greatest consumption.<\/p>\n<h3>Our results<\/h3>\n<p>This analysis focused on the supply, manufacture and testing of X-IFU subsystems, as well as the logistics and manpower involved. We find that the most significant environmental impacts come from testing activities (linked to energy consumption in clean rooms), office work (linked to energy consumption in buildings) and instrument manufacturing (linked to the use of mineral and metal resources). We estimate a total carbon footprint of 25.5 ktCO2eq associated with the development, testing and delivery of X-IFU subsystems. In addition to the work undertaken to reduce the environmental footprint associated with travel within the consortium since 2019, the study concludes on the importance of focusing reduction actions on the three points previously stated. The lifecycle analysis that began in the first half of 2024 will result in an updated LCA, maintaining the ambition to reduce X-IFU&#8217;s environmental footprint, while complying with rigorous requirements in terms of risk management and performance.<\/p>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-background is-style-wide\" style=\"background-color:#0097d4;color:#0097d4\"\/>\n\n\n<p><strong>Article en fran\u00e7ais :<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Depuis 2021, le consortium X-IFU est engag\u00e9 dans une d\u00e9marche d&#8217;analyse de cycle de vie (ACV) de l&#8217;instrument, de mani\u00e8re \u00e0 \u00e9valuer et r\u00e9duire les impacts environnementaux associ\u00e9s \u00e0 son d\u00e9veloppement. Il s&#8217;agit d&#8217;un processus pionnier dans le domaine de la recherche en astrophysique car les analyses de cycle de vie restent encore \u00e0 la marge. Ce travail de long-terme aboutit \u00e0 une premi\u00e8re publication scientifique relatant les r\u00e9sultats et les principaux impacts environnementaux sur lesquels prioriser les actions de r\u00e9duction. Cette publication intitul\u00e9e &#8220;<em>Life Cycle Assessment of the Athena X-ray Integral Field Unit<\/em>&#8221; a \u00e9t\u00e9 publi\u00e9e dans\u00a0Experimental Astronomy en avril 2024. Elle est en acc\u00e8s libre sur <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2404.15122\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2404.15122\">ArXiv<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden\">Int\u00e9grer les contraintes environnementales dans la recherche en astrophysique<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>La crise climatique exige une action urgente de la part de toutes les composantes de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9, y compris de la communaut\u00e9 scientifique. C&#8217;est pourquoi il convient d&#8217;int\u00e9grer les consid\u00e9rations environnementales dans la recherche en astrophysique et l&#8217;analyse de cycle de vie en constitue la premi\u00e8re \u00e9tape. L&#8217;ACV est une d\u00e9marche d\u2019\u00e9co-conception qui \u00e9value les impacts environnementaux d&#8217;un produit ou d&#8217;un service depuis sa conception \u00e0 sa fin de vie, en quantifiant les flux d&#8217;\u00e9nergie et de mati\u00e8re utilis\u00e9s. Cette d\u00e9marche d\u00e9taill\u00e9e dans la publication scientifique et les r\u00e9sultats obtenus visent \u00e0 mettre en \u00e9vidence les impacts environnementaux les plus significatifs de la conception du X-IFU et \u00e0 \u00e9mettre des recommandations pour les r\u00e9duire. Alors que le design de l\u2019instrument vient de changer suite \u00e0 la reformulation de la mission Athena, une seconde analyse du cycle de vie d\u00e9bute actuellement pour mettre \u00e0 jour et affiner ces premiers r\u00e9sultats.<\/p>\n<h3>Analyse de cycle de vie : quelle m\u00e9thode ?<\/h3>\n<p>L&#8217;ACV du X-IFU a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9e dans le cadre d&#8217;un contrat avec <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scalian.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wplink-edit=\"true\">SCALIAN<\/a>, une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 sp\u00e9cialiste de la transformation des entreprises et qui dispose d\u2019une expertise forte dans l\u2019\u00e9valuation de l\u2019impact environnemental des projets spatiaux. Au moment o\u00f9 cette ACV a \u00e9t\u00e9 r\u00e9alis\u00e9e, tr\u00e8s peu de projets scientifiques avaient fait l&#8217;objet d&#8217;une telle \u00e9tude ce qui a confront\u00e9 les \u00e9quipes au manque de donn\u00e9es pr\u00e9-existantes. D&#8217;un point de vue m\u00e9thodologique, une ACV se d\u00e9roule en trois phases qui sont :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>la d\u00e9finition de son objectif et de son champ d&#8217;application ;<\/li>\n<li>la phase d&#8217;analyse de l&#8217;inventaire du cycle de vie ;<\/li>\n<li>la phase d&#8217;\u00e9valuation de l&#8217;impact du cycle de vie.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>La phase de d\u00e9finition de l&#8217;objectif permet d&#8217;identifier l&#8217;objectif de l&#8217;\u00e9valuation, son p\u00e9rim\u00e8tre, ses applications, le public cible et les parties prenantes. La phase d&#8217;analyse de l&#8217;inventaire du cycle de vie permet d&#8217;inventorier, de collecter et d&#8217;organiser les donn\u00e9es n\u00e9cessaires. \u00c0 cette \u00e9tape, la question de l&#8217;h\u00e9t\u00e9rog\u00e9n\u00e9it\u00e9 des donn\u00e9es recueillies constitue un d\u00e9fi majeur dans la conduite de l&#8217;\u00e9tude. La phase d&#8217;\u00e9valuation de l&#8217;impact du cycle de vie permet de quantifier les impacts environnementaux selon les diff\u00e9rents indicateurs utilis\u00e9s dans l&#8217;\u00e9tude et de d\u00e9terminer quels sont les points les plus consommateurs.<\/p>\n<h3>Les r\u00e9sultats obtenus<\/h3>\n<p>Cette analyse a principalement port\u00e9 sur la fourniture, la fabrication et les tests des sous-syst\u00e8mes du X-IFU, ainsi que sur la logistique et la main-d&#8217;\u0153uvre impliqu\u00e9es. Nous constatons que les impacts environnementaux les plus significatifs proviennent des activit\u00e9s de test (li\u00e9es \u00e0 la consommation d&#8217;\u00e9nergie dans les salles blanches), du travail de bureau (li\u00e9 \u00e0 la consommation d&#8217;\u00e9nergie dans les b\u00e2timents) et des mat\u00e9riaux entrant dans la r\u00e9alisation de l\u2019instrument (li\u00e9e \u00e0 l&#8217;utilisation de ressources min\u00e9rales et m\u00e9talliques). Nous estimons \u00e0 25,5 ktCO2eq l&#8217;empreinte carbone totale li\u00e9e au d\u00e9veloppement, aux essais et \u00e0 la livraison des sous-syst\u00e8mes du X-IFU. En plus du travail entrepris pour r\u00e9duire l&#8217;empreinte environnementale li\u00e9e aux d\u00e9placements dans le cadre des activit\u00e9s du consortium (depuis 2019), l&#8217;\u00e9tude conclue sur l&#8217;importance de concentrer les actions de r\u00e9duction sur les trois points pr\u00e9c\u00e9demment \u00e9nonc\u00e9s.
